Portofino

Looking for a laid-back spot where you can soak up sea views and dig into comfort food done right? Let me introduce you to Portofino, a charming restaurant perched along the Marine Promenade at Union Terrace in New Brighton, Wallasey. Whether you're in the mood for a solo lunch, a cozy dinner, or simply craving something sweet with a hot drink, this place delivers a little taste of Italy with a British coastal twist.

From the moment you step in, the vibe is warm and inviting. Portofino feels like the kind of place where locals gather and visitors come back for seconds. It offers wheelchair-accessible seating, entrance, and toilet facilities, which makes it welcoming to everyone. You’ll also love their flexible service options-whether you prefer dining in, grabbing a quick takeaway, or enjoying a kerbside pickup, they’ve got it covered. And yes, there’s outdoor seating for those sun-soaked afternoons with a chilled glass of wine.

Now let’s talk about food-because that’s what really draws people in.

The menu is packed with Italian-inspired classics and a few global surprises. Craving pasta? Their Seafood Linguini is generous and brimming with flavor, while the Lasagne brings that nostalgic, home-cooked vibe. The Penne is another standout, especially when paired with a glass from their great wine list. If you're more into meat, the Beef Stroganoff is a crowd-pleaser-tender strips of beef in creamy sauce that hits all the right notes.

Pizza lovers? You’re in luck. The Pizza Salami packs a punch with its bold flavors, and the crust has that perfect balance between crispy and chewy. Want something to nibble on while sipping a cocktail? Start with Antipasto, Bruschetta, or their Garlic Cheese Bread-perfect for sharing. And speaking of cocktails, their list is surprisingly good, with a solid variety that pairs well with their hearty fare.

Seafood fans won’t want to miss the Salmon or Calamari, both cooked to perfection and plated beautifully. For something lighter, the Mozzarella Salad is fresh and satisfying without being fussy.

But let’s not skip dessert, because Portofino takes it seriously. Their Special Gelato is smooth, rich, and comes in flavors that’ll make you pause mid-conversation. If you’re a chocolate lover, the Hot Chocolate Fudge Cake is indulgence in every bite, especially when paired with a hot coffee or a cup of their great tea selection. And for those who appreciate something a little creamy and classic? The Cheesecake does not disappoint.

Another thing that sets Portofino apart is its drink offerings. Alongside the food, they serve beer, spirits, wine, cocktails, coffee, and healthy options too. Whether you’re sipping a cheeky espresso martini, enjoying a late-night snack, or just in for a quick bite, there’s always something that fits your moment.

It's also worth noting that this place is popular for lunch and dinner, and it’s easy to see why. The ambiance is relaxed but polished enough for a date night or a casual business meal. Solo diners are welcome, and with the friendly staff and steady flow of regulars, you never feel out of place.

In a seaside town filled with dining choices, Portofino stands out by offering variety, comfort, and flavor all in one. Whether you’re in the mood for a traditional plate of Carbanara, a Cheesey Garlic Bread starter, or a refreshing Empanada and cocktail combo, this is the kind of spot you’ll find yourself thinking about days later.

And trust me-once you’ve tasted their Charcuterie with Prosciutto or sipped on one of their signature coffees, you’ll know exactly why Portofino has become a go-to in New Brighton.

On this visit on a Friday early evening, as always the restaurant is well presented, staff are very welcoming. The restaurant in the customer area is always very clean with a fantastic decor and layout. The staff and very professional, polite and friendly. The services is second to none, with food being served in good time. Glasses and cutlery as crystal clean. The food is well presented but unfortunately lacked in flavour, and was rather bland, low pan pizza lacked in flavour with the pineapple and ham having a different taste than expected, and cheesy garlic bread was greasey with no cheese flavour. Spaghetti carbornia was also lacking in flavour and the ham appeared to be the same used on the pizza. Mozzarella Fritti was also lacking in flavour and can be filling as a starter for some. Clearing of plates is very prompt giving you room on your table throughout the meal. Price against food is moderate to expensive depending on what you order and what your expectations maybe, but overall worth a visit.

Had another lovely meal at Portofino. We were seated opposite the sea view. The general atmosphere in the restaurant is serene, a lot of effort has been made to create an authentic Italian feel. The food as always was top quality, a taste sensation and is very reasonably priced. I would recommend to anyone for romantic dining or even with the family or work fucntions. Tip- Make sure you order a garlic bread with cheese, it's too good not to!

A walk-in and a table for 3 with no waiting. A surprise for a Friday at about 5.30. Quite a wait for the food after ordering, but that's likely to be because everything is cooked fresh to order. Interestingly, we saw the place filling up nicely as we waited and by the time we left it was proper busy. Friendly and attentive service and we didn't feel rushed, so no complaints there. Onto the food - 3 different styles of pasta (one each), chicken with mine, and ham and prawns with the other two. All perfectly prepared and for me the creamiest sauce I have ever tasted. We were offered the dessert menu, but decided it might be a bit too much and float on the beers we were heading for at the 'Beagle' after. My first time visiting this particular establishment, but it won't be my last, that's for sure.
